On the final day of a three-day diving excursion off the coast of Santa Cruz Island in California, a 75-foot vessel called the Conception went up in flames. It was carrying 33 passengers (including a family of five celebrating a birthday) and 6 crew members. Five of six the crew members, who were on the top deck of the ship when the fire broke out on Labor Day morning, jumped off and were rescued by a “good Samaritan” recreational vessel. No one else survived – the blaze blocked their escape routes from the boat’s lower sleeping decks. Authorities are currently investigating potential sources of the deadly fire. One possibility is the cell phone charging station, located directly above the bunk bed areas.
