JAYME CLOSS

As the details of Jayme Closs’ abduction and captivity continue to emerge, we just can’t even imagine…forced to spend three months held against her will in the cabin of a creepy, mentally disturbed stranger after having witnessed the deaths of her parents?? Hidden under a bed with no food, water, or access to a toilet for as long as 12 hours? Likely sexually assaulted? Awful. The good news is that 13-year old Closs escaped, is alive, and has reunited with family members (pictured w/aunt, above). The suspect, 21-year-old Jake Patterson — a man not on police’s radar, with no criminal record but allegedly with an obsession he’d developed for Closs after he spotted her boarding a school bus, confessed to the horrific crimes. Patterson is now in jail on a $5 million bail, charged with murder, kidnapping and armed burglary.  If convicted, he faces a mandatory sentence of life in prison without possibility of parole. Next court date is February 6th.

PG&E BANKRUPTCY

On Monday, Pacific Gas and Electric—the investor-owned utility that provides electricity and gas for approximately 16 million people across Northern California—announced its plans for bankruptcy following an investigation that determined its responsibility for at least 18 of the 21 large wildfires that blazed through California in 2017. The state is also looking into whether PG&E’s equipment sparked last year’s Camp Fire –  the deadliest fire in the state’s history, taking the lives of at least 86 people.

DEATH FROM ACCIDENTAL OPIOID OVERDOSE?!

Get this: you now have better odds of dying from an opioid overdose (a one in 96 chance) than on the road (one in 93). This is according to The National Safety Council, which crunched the numbers and shared them earlier in the week. The Council also found the odds of dying from an overdose were greater than the risk of death from falls, pedestrian incidents, drowning and fire.

GOODBYE, DOLLY!

Legendary Broadway star Carol Channing died of natural causes at her home in Rancho Mirage, California, on Tuesday.  She was 97 years old. Even though Channing was best known for her Tony Award-winning role as Dolly Levi in the hit Broadway musical “Hello Dolly!” (a role she performed some 5,000 times), she actually got her big break years earlier when she was cast as the diamond-loving showgirl Lorelei Lee in “Gentleman Prefer Blondes”. Her performance of the now classic song “Diamonds Are A Girls Best Friend” is what catapulted her to fame.

IT’S BEEN FUN(DS)…

Vanguard Founder Jack Bogle passed away a few days ago at the age of 89. He is best known for creating the world’s first index fund, a low-cost way for the masses to get into the markets. Always one to put the little guy first, and never one to talk about himself (his background is amazing) or lament over his health issues (at least 6 heart attacks–first one at age 31), Bogle was highly respected by those in the investing world and was always fun to watch on CNBC given his simplified advice [“Investing is not nearly as difficult as it looks. Successful investing involves doing a few things right and avoiding serious mistakes.”].
