A DAY IN COURT

The first 13 parents involved in the college admission scandal, including the appropriate-acting Felicity Huffman (quiet, demure, accompanied by brother) and the inappropriate-acting Lori Loughlin (smiling? laughing? signing autographs?), appeared in federal court on Wednesday. They were told their legal rights, charges against them and possible penalties for the alleged crimes. While these two actresses have been dealing with all sorts of repercussions since this story broke – from lost jobs to marital strain, and estrangement from their kids, the ultimate price – jail time – is expected, even if they cut plea bargains.

DEATH BY…DIET

Bad diets are responsible for more deaths than smoking? About 11 million deaths a year, or one in five – linked to poor diets? These are just some of the findings of a newly-released global study. It’s not necessarily due to what we’re consuming (too much salt and sugar, trans fat, processed stuff), but rather what we’re NOT: whole grains, fruits, vegetables, fish, nuts, seeds, and other good stuff [Think: Mediterranean diet].

REALLY, FACEBOOK…REALLY?

On Wednesday, a cybersecurity firm said it found hundreds of millions of Facebook user data records exposed. This data – everything from people’s comments, interests and ‘likes’ to email addresses and even passwords – was sitting – literally – on Amazon’s cloud-computing servers, which are publicly accessible. Is this getting old or is this getting old? As for Facebook’s response–lame, as we have come to expect: “[Our] policies prohibit storing Facebook information in a public database. Once alerted to the issue, we worked with Amazon to take down the databases. We are committed to working with the developers on our platform to protect people’s data.”

MORE MEASLES CASES

According to the CDC, there are now 387 confirmed measles cases in the U.S. so far this year. That’s the second highest since the disease was declared eliminated from the US in 2000, and surpasses last year’s total. Outbreaks, which are defined as three or more cases, are ongoing across four states: New York, Washington, New Jersey, and California. International travelers are bringing the virus here from other countries such as Israel, Ukraine and the Philippines, where large outbreaks are occurring.
