Graduating seniors at Morehouse College got an unexpected gift, and it was a big one. Their commencement speaker, billionaire tech investor and philanthropist, Robert F. Smith, promised to pay off their student loans. This announcement came as a huge surprise/shock to everyone since Smith did not inform anyone of his plans — not Morehouse’s administration…members of his inner circle…or even, perhaps, his Playboy model wife? Regardless, once everyone realized that this generous offer was for real, there was a whole lot of cheering, hugging, etc. The total amount covers all 396 students and is worth tens of millions of dollars. Debt relief for the Class of 2019 is expected to be immediate. #fuelforthebus
A new study released this past week shows that an estimated 80,110 new cancer cases among adults 20 and older in the U.S. are attributable to eating a poor diet (too much sugar, processed meats; not enough fruits, vegetables, whole grains). That’s the equivalent of about 5.2% of all invasive cancer cases, which is comparable to the proportion of cancer burden attributable to alcohol.
Severe weather conditions – from violent tornados to floods to thunderstorms to hail – have affected millions of Americans for several weeks now, and this past week was no exception. We’re talking total havoc, from the Plains states to the Midwest to the South and beyond. Several deaths have been reported thus far, and the weather watches and warnings continue today and through the weekend. The big story going forward is the flooding along the Missouri and Mississippi rivers. Over the next couple of days, it is expected to be severe.
