MEGA-MERGER

Scale, baby, scale! After three years of on-again, off-again talks, CBS and Viacom are finally back together in a concerted effort to take on rivals Netflix, Disney, and AT&T. The all-stock deal, announced on Tuesday, creates a $30-billion multi-platform content powerhouse (new name: ViacomCBS), and makes media mogul Shari Redstone, controlling shareholder, the most influential woman in the industry.

KID-SCRIPTIONS

Subscription boxes are super-hot in the adult world, and now they’re gaining traction with kids. StitchFix has one, Walmart has one (Kidbox), Foot Locker has one (Rockets of Awesome), and now Nike has one (Nike Adventure Club). Geared to those aged 2 to 10, Nike has been building this service – under the original name of Easy Kicks – for the past couple of years, offering 100 varieties of sneakers on a monthly, bimonthly, or quarterly basis (at a cost that works out to about $50-$60/pair). The idea is to generate recurring revenue, and focusing on kids makes sense since they outgrow (or ruin) shoes faster than you can say Swoosh.

DAYTIME NAPS AND ALZHEIMER’S?

Napping too much during the daytime? It may be an early warning sign you have Alzheimer’s, and should not be considered compensation for poor nighttime sleep caused by Alzheimer’s. That’s according to new research that came out a couple of days ago, which goes against conventional studies. Apparently, the brain cells that keep us awake during the day are the first to be targeted by the neurological disease. Memory problems come later.

SIMONE BILES

Did you see Olympic gymnast Simone Biles do that amazing “triple-double” in her floor routine? She nailed it, just 48 hours after being the first woman to land a double-double dismount off the balance beam. Wow…and wow. Two history-making, gravity-defying moves and a sixth national title – all over the course of a weekend at the U.S. Championships in Kansas City, Missouri. Next up: Tokyo.
